Middle school students place first in state



SPARTA — The Sparta Middle School Chess Team won its second consecutive New Jersey Middle School Championship at the New Jersey State Championships, held recently at Brookdale Community College in Lincroft. Austin K. led the effort with three wins and a draw. Kyra S., AJ T., Dillon M. and Ian C. each had three wins. Adding to the effort were Colin C., Thomas W., Travis K. and Erich S.

The Elementary team placed third behind Keith J.’s three wins and a draw. Lizzy W. had three wins, and Daniel B. had two wins and a draw. Ryan R., Christopher H., Griffin M., Alex S., Tyler S., and Emily B. contributed to the excellent showing.

Cooper W. paced the Primary team with 3 wins, as the team placed fifth. Evan J. had two wins and a draw. The rest of team includes Cleary W., Philippos C., Reilly K., Morgan K., Daniel L., Alexis L., Brittany B., Ben L., Christopher J. and Brandon R.

The Sparta High School’s varsity team placed twelfth in the NJ High School tournament at Rutgers. The team defeated Mountain Lakes and Monmouth Regional, and lost to Watchung Hills, the eventual champion. Rob T. won three times and Matt F. had two wins and a tie. Eryk B., Natasha S., and Kyle B. rounded out the team.
