NEW JERSEY GRADE LEVEL CHAMPIONSHIPS
NOVEMBER 6, 2011, Brookdale College, Lincroft, NJ
Eight Sparta Chess Teams took several awards including 3 Championship Titles - CONGRATULATIONS to our Kindergarten, 6th and 8th Grade State Champions and coaches! There were many more noteworthy accomplishments: 2nd Place Teams: 10th and 3rd Grades, 3rd Place Team: 4th Grade, 4th Place Teams: 2nd and 7th Grades, as well as many individual awards. Thank you Coach Tom, Rick, and all of our volunteers who have worked hard to offer the best public school chess program in the state of New Jersey! Read more

NATIONAL MIDDLE SCHOOL (K-9) CHAMPIONSHIPS
APRIL 30, 2012, San Diego, CA
Sparta Chess Team Shines At Nationals
The Sparta Middle School Chess Team placed third in the U1000 division at the National Junior High Chess Championships held at San Diego, California. Thomas W. and Travis K. led the effort with five wins out of seven. Keith J. won four and tied one, and Anthony E. and Christopher H. four wins each. The team was in fierce competition with Washington Parks Academy in Redford, Michigan (the winner), and Rockaway Middle School from Miami, Florida. Thomas and Travis received awards for individual play.
The Middle School also fielded a team in the U750 division that played with three instead of the usual four or more players. Lizzy W., Griffin M., and Morgan K. battled their way to a tenth place finish. Lizzy was cited for individual achievement in winning five games.
The Sparta Elementary Team finished eighth in the same event. Lucas R. had four wins. Reilly K., Sam E. and Vaiden P. contributed to the effort.

Ian C. only lost once, and Austin K. had three wins and a draw as the team finished 20th in the U1600 division. The team advanced to a more difficult level of competition due to last years successful 3rd place finish in the U1200 Championships at Nashville. Eryk B., Adam B., and Colin C. also participated.
