Sparta Chess Team wins in Baltimore


Baltimore, MD — The Sparta Chess Team won two more regional championships, bringing their total to nine in the last four years. In addition, four Sparta players placed first in their events.

The team titles were won by two teams from Helen Morgan, one in the K-5 Championship Division, and one in the K-5 Reserve Division. Rowan Mendel tied for first place in the K-5 Championship, and was assisted by Ian Bellush, Griffin Brawer, Ayush Iyer, and JC Langeraap. This marks the third consecutive year that this group has won a Regional Championship

In the K-5 Reserve Division, Chloe Brawer went undefeated with the rest of the team, Surekha Selvaraj, Leah Andrini, Kristopher and Kristina Carneiro and Natalie Torres, turned in strong efforts.

Sparta High School had two players tied for first place in the High School Championship. Cameron Flores went undefeated for the second consecutive year, and Chris Hakkenberg also had a clean slate. The team finished second to the Washington DC International High School. The other team members are Ryan Ryersen, and Alex Schimpf.

The Sparta Middle School Team was focer to play in three different sections and could not enter a team score. Akshat Iyer won 2 games in the HS Championship. Cole Potter and Kyle Sutton won 3 games each in the K-8 Reserve Championship.
